Duke Orsino And Unrequited Love In Shakespeares Twelfth...

Unrequited love can be cute, but it also can be gross. It all depends on the person, and in Shakespeare’s â€Å"Twelfth Night† Duke Orsino’s love for Olivia is definitely gross. The character of Duke Orsino in the original play is not particularly charming, but Channing Tatum’s Duke Orsino in â€Å"She’s the Man† is much more endearing. It’s not just Tatum’s good looks, but his performance itself that makes Duke seem more likable. Despite the unrequited love in both works, in â€Å"Twelfth Night†, Duke Orsinos selfish love for Olivia makes his character entitled and unlikable, while Tatums portrayal of an awkward, pining Duke in â€Å"She’s the Man† paints the character in a more relatable and personable light. In the scene where Duke Orsino speaks of†¦show more content†¦In Shes the Man, Duke has a conversation with his friends that mirrors the aforementioned scene in Twelfth Night. However, his li nes actually indicate his love for Olivia, as he talks to his friends, saying: Duke: Don’t talk about her that way. Sebastian: Is that your girlfriend? Andrew: He wishes. Toby: She was dating this college guy, but he dumped her. Andrew: I hear shes a total mess now, really vulnerable. Confidence, self-esteem is way down. Toby: In man words, its time to pounce. (Fickman, She’s the Man) Unlike Orsino in Twelfth Night, Duke doesnt objectify Olivias body, as he berates Sebastian for pointing out Olivias butt. Dukes insecurity over his crush on Olivia is also shown when his friend says that Duke wishes Olivia was his girlfriend. Despite his good looks, Duke is unsure how to approach Olivia. This display of vulnerability makes the viewer sympathize with Duke and his hopeless crush over Olivia, a contrast to the entitled, persistent Orsino in Twelfth Night. The end of the conversation in â€Å"Shes the Man† is the most similar to the Act 1 Scene 1 of the play, they also talk about pouncing on Olivia as she is really vulnerable. However, Duke’s friends say these lines, instead of Duke himself. Duke gives no indication that he agrees with the way his friends think. Pop music is a genre that has revolutionized the music industry, bringing in a huge new audience and creating many new sub genres and marketing schemes. The birthplace of pop music, at this time, pop was unheard of, many artists were more focused on Rock ND Roll and soul.
